The traditional straight razor shave, the art of a pause
An artisanal 45-minute ritual. The hot towel that opens the pores, the lather whipped by brush, the straight razor blade glided with mastery, the soothing care that closes the session. A pause outside of time, in Paris or at your home.
The ritual in seven steps
The traditional straight razor shave is not a utility service, it's an experience. Here's how each of my signature sessions unfolds.
-
1
Beard and skin assessment
I examine your beard structure (growth direction, density, sensitive zones), the state of your skin (dryness, potential irritations, beauty marks), and we discuss the desired result.
-
2
The hot towel
A hot moist towel is applied to the face for 2 to 3 minutes. The steam opens the pores, softens the hair and prepares the skin to gently receive the blade. First moment of relaxation.
-
3
The pre-shave oil
Application of a specific oil that creates a protective layer between skin and blade, facilitates glide, and nourishes the epidermis. A step often forgotten in express shaves, but essential.
-
4
The brush-whipped lather
I whip the lather directly on your skin with a quality badger brush, in circular motions. This hand preparation, not from tube or can, produces an airy texture that perfectly envelops each hair.
-
5
First straight razor pass
Perfectly sharpened blade, glided with the hair grain at a precise angle. The first pass removes 90% of the beard. It's a slow, mastered gesture, requiring years of practice to be executed with confidence and without nicks.
-
6
Second pass against the grain
New lather application, then blade pass against the grain for finishing. This second pass distinguishes a traditional shave from a simple one: it ensures a perfectly smooth result, lasting 30% longer.
-
7
Post-shave care
Cold water to tighten pores, soothing balm or elixir adapted to your skin type, light massage. The session ends with a pure care moment, which closes the ritual and marks the transition.
Who is the traditional shave for
-
Men who seek an experience
The straight razor shave is not a backup service. It's a sensory pause, a moment outside of time. If you only seek to shave your beard quickly, the electric razor at home will be more efficient. If you seek a ritual, this is the place.
-
Before an important event
Wedding (morning of), major business meeting, decisive dinner, contract signing, photoshoot. The traditional shave leaves a visibly cleaner, smoother skin that changes the immediate perception of the face.
-
Sensitive skin or ingrown hairs
Counter-intuitively, the straight razor irritates sensitive skin less than a multi-blade razor. The single blade, glided with precision, doesn't pull the hair under the skin and drastically limits ingrown hairs.
-
Lovers of artisanal gesture
For those who appreciate transmitted know-how, authentic objects, slow gestures in a fast world. The straight razor shave is to men's care what artisanal cuisine is to restoration: an artisan approach.
-
As a gift

Why the straight razor rather than a modern razor
The multi-blade razor was invented to make shaving fast and accessible at home. The straight razor existed before. It survived for a simple reason: it does better.
- Unmatched precision: a single, long, perfectly sharpened blade. It follows facial contours, jaw angles, difficult zones (under the nose, around the mouth, in the neck) with a finesse no multi-blade cartridge can reproduce.
- Longer-lasting result: at equivalent cut depth, the result lasts 30% longer. The single blade cuts the hair cleanly, without pulling. The modern razor, by multiplying blades, lifts the hair and cuts it under the skin, which over time creates ingrown hairs.
- Less irritation: paradoxically, sensitive skin tolerates the straight razor better. The modern razor multiplies friction on the same zone. One blade, one mastered pass, means less aggression.
- Sensory experience: the towel's heat, the lather's scent, the brush's contact, the blade's characteristic sound, the final care's coolness. No modern razor offers this.
- The transmitted gesture: holding a straight razor requires years of practice. When you are handled by a barber who masters this gesture, you witness a know-how that is not learned online.
